We will deliver an assembly for Year 9 students at St Margaret Ward Catholic Academy (Stoke-On-Trent) on 17th November 2021.
The activity is called Buoyancy Scale and the demonstration illustrates the concepts of density and buoyancy, along with why and how things float. By using a so-called ‘buoyancy scale,’ students will be able to see how much more mass a can of normal Coke has than a can of Diet Coke (because of the additional sugar). This extra mass in the same volume increases the can of normal Coke’s density and causes it to sink more. By ‘balancing the scale’ and adding the missing mass to the can of Diet Coke, students will be able to see how much extra sugar is added to sugary drinks.
The session will be virtual and led by a General Electric volunteer, alongside one of our Connectr facilitators! The assembly will reach 200 students.
